The Potato Ricer, also known as a kitchen ricer or a food ricer, is one of those kitchen gadgets that not only work, but are also a mainstay of any well equipped kitchen.

The way that the Potato Ricer works is like this: The Potato Ricer forces the potato through small holes which are just about the size of a grain of rice. This is where the Potato Ricer gets its name.

Perhaps the most popular use for the Potato Ricer is in the making of mashed potatoes. This kitchen gadget makes great mashed potatoes a breeze. And as an added bonus the Potato Ricer will make sure that your mashed potatoes do not have any lumps. Is this one of the greatest kitchen gadgets ever?

You can now see why some people call the Potato Ricer a food ricer. If any food is soft enough to fit through the rice size holes then the Potato Ricer will work on them. You can experiment with different fruits and vegetables with the food ricer.

One other very important bit of information you should know about the kitchen ricer is that it will squeeze excess water from sliced or grated potatoes. This comes in super handy if you want to make homemade crispy chips, crisps, or hash browns with your Potato Ricer.

Two Most Popular Brands Of Potatoe Ricer

There are many different brands of Potatoe Ricer on the market. But in reality there are two brands that dominate the Potatoe Ricer market:

Oxo Potatoe Ricer

Cuisipro Potato Ricer

The Oxo Potato Ricer works like this: You place the Oxo Potato Ricer over a bowl or pot, squeeze the kitchen gadgets handles together, and mashed potatoes, fruits, and vegetables ooze right through. The Oxo Potato Ricer has the special, “Oxo Good Grips” which helps hold it in place and along with the Oxo Soft Handles, which provide a comfortable grip. The Oxo Potato Ricer is made of Stainless Steel which makes it one of the better kitchen gadgets you can buy.

The Cuisipro Potato Ricer: This Potato Ricer is also known as Browne Cuisipro Stainless Steel Potato Ricer. Many professional chefs swear by the Cuisipro Potato Ricer. It is a first rate Potato Ricer that is made of durable stainless steel and is one of the better quality kitchen gadgets you can buy.

You can always mash your potatoes, but if you want a finer, fluffier consistency consider a Potato Ricer. It is a favorite kitchen gadget in some of the best commercial kitchens everywhere. Don’t forget that you can also use the Potato Ricer for vegetables, baby food, and applesauce too!

So next time you want mashed potatoes, mash potatoes, or even smashed potatoes..reach for the Potato Ricer.

How To Make Mashed Potatoes Cheese Pie

Ingredients

1 1/2 pound of Yukon Gold Potatoes (washed and sliced thin)

1/2 pound of cheddar cheese, grated

1/2 teaspoon of salt

4 tablespoons heavy cream

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon milk

salt & pepper to tasted

Directions

Place the potatoes into a saucepan with the salt. Add water until you have the potatoes covered.

Bring to a boil. Then cover the saucepan and let simmer for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are done. Test with a fork. Should be able to poke through with ease.

Warm the cream and melt the butter together. You can use the microwave for this step.

Drain the water from the pot and put the potatoes into a large bowl.

Add the cream and melted butter in the bowl with the potatoes.

Mash the potatoes with a potato masher (duh?)

Now use a spoon to beat the potatoes a little bit more. As you do this add the milk and most of the cheese. Reserve some of the cheese for a topping. Do not over-beat the potatoes unless you like potato glue.

Salt & Pepper to taste

Place the potatoes in an oven-proof dish. Top off with the remaining cheese.

Place in 425F oven (uncovered) for 20-30 minutes or until cheese is melted on top and slightly brown.

Do you call them mashed potatoes or smashed potatoes? It doesn’t matter as long as the mashed potatoes taste great. Probably one of the all time favorite side dishes in American homes is mashed potatoes. Is it any wonder? There are a million different mashed potatoes recipes floating around. They have varying ingredients, and can be served very basic to very gourmet. One of the great things about any mashed potatoes recipe is that it is a “make ahead potatoes” dish. The mashed potatoes sometimes taste better the next day!

I think that garlic mashed potatoes has always been one of my favorites. My mother used to make them at least once a month and I always looked forward to eating them. Of course cheesy potatoes that were mashed came in a close second in my house. In any case the best mashed potatoes were always the ones that mom served the family with the evening meal.

How To Make Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

2 1/2 pounds of baking potatoes, cut into 1 inch chunks. After they are cut up you should have about 8 cups.

1/4 cup of milk or half and half

1/4 cup of butter

3/4 teaspoon salt (more or less to taste)

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Pinch of nutmeg

1/2 cup cheddar cheese (can use more if you like)

1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Directions

Place the potatoes in a large pan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.

Drain the potatoes

If you want really smooth mashed potatoes you can put them through a ricer at this point.

Transfer the potatoes to a large bowl.

If you have a food processor go to step 6. If you don’t have a food processor skip step 6 and go to step 7.

Put the potatoes, milk, butter, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, cheddar cheese, and Worcestershire sauce in the food processor and get them potatoes smooooth.

Place all the ingredients with the potatoes into a large bowl and with an electric hand held mixer, beat the potatoes until they are light and creamy.
