There is a reason that you can buy a Canned Sweet Potato at the grocery store. Not everybody wants to make a homemade recipe every time they are cooking. The canned sweet potato is an acceptable alternative to a homemade Sweet Potato Recipe when you find yourself short on time.

Sweet Baked Potatoes Or A Canned Sweet Potato

That is all up to you. People use sweet potatoes for a whole variety of side dish recipes:

Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Casserole

Sweet Potato Fries and French Fries

Sweet Potato Yams

Sweet Potatoes Candied

Baked Sweet Potatoes

Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Really….Sweet Potatoes With just about everything!!!

Our great country of America is only 10th on the list of sweet potato growers. Would you like to take a guess who is number 1? Well it is none other than China!

Do you think that the Canned Sweet Potato that you buy at the store is the same as a yam? If you said yes then you would be wrong. A yam is a large, starchy, tropical root crop grown in Asia or West Africa that can weigh more than a large dog. In North Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi sweet potato farmers began calling their crop “yams” to distinguish it from the white-fleshed sweet potatoes.

The USDA requires that when it is used to refer to sweet potatoes, the word “yam” must be accompanied by the words “sweet potatoes” on all labels and marketing materials.

Sweet potatoes are one of the most nutritious vegetables. Low in calories with no fat and no cholesterol, they contain antioxidants; vitamins C, B6, and E; iron; potassium; and beta-carotene. They’re also a great source of fiber. Canned Sweet Potatoes are also very nutritious but not so much as the non-canned.

Those Southern Belles love their sweet potatoes—consuming 54% of all canned sweet potatoes, and 42% of all fresh sweet potatoes. I think they consume 99% of all grits.

When a recipe calls for white potatoes, use sweet potatoes instead. They’re also the perfect ingredient when making soups, stews, casseroles, puddings, cake, muffins, and bread.

If you’re using canned sweet potatoes in a recipe, add them last because they’re already cooked.

One 15.5 ounce can of sweet potatoes, drained, equals one pound of fresh sweet potatoes.

A 15.5 ounce can contains approximately 2 cups of sweet potatoes.
One cup of canned sweet potatoes equals one medium-sized, cooked fresh sweet potato.

While the potato is baking you can dice the bacon and saute in a pan until cooked. Remove the bacon from the pan and reserve the fat

Now you will need to cook the red and yellow diced onions in the bacon fat until they are soft

Set the bacon and onions aside

When the potatoes are done remove from the oven, set them aside until they have cooled enough where you can handle them

Now that the potatoes are cool enough to handle: Cut the potatoes in half lengthwise and scoop all of the pulp into a large bowl. Be careful not to poke through the shells.

Stir in the sour cream and milk to the potato mixture

Mix in the American Cheese, onions, and most of the bacon. You are going to keep some of the bacon in reserve for a topping on the potatoes

Spoon the mixture back into 4 of the potato shell halves. The potatoes shouldn’t be flat in the shells, they should look like a mound

Place the potatoes back in the oven and bake for 1/2 hour

Remove the potatoes from the oven and sprinkle the cheddar cheese, scallions, and remaining bacon on top of the potatoes.

Bake for 5 more minutes

How To Make Mashed Potatoes Cheese Pie

1/2 pound of cheddar cheese, grated

1/2 teaspoon of salt

4 tablespoons heavy cream

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon milk

salt & pepper to tasted

Place the potatoes into a saucepan with the salt. Add water until you have the potatoes covered.

Bring to a boil. Then cover the saucepan and let simmer for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are done. Test with a fork. Should be able to poke through with ease.

Warm the cream and melt the butter together. You can use the microwave for this step.

Drain the water from the pot and put the potatoes into a large bowl.

Add the cream and melted butter in the bowl with the potatoes.

Mash the potatoes with a potato masher (duh?)

Salt & Pepper to taste

Place the potatoes in an oven-proof dish. Top off with the remaining cheese.

Potato French Fries With Parmesan Cheese!! There really isn’t much more to say then they are so good. Fried Potato Fries go really well with any meat dish, or just as a stand alone snack. Enjoy!

Secret: To make crispy french fries you need to cook them twice. The first time will get rid of all of the water and cook the potato fries halfway. The second time will finish cooking them and make them crispy.

How To Make Fried Potato Fries

Ingredients

6-8 large potatoes

Oil for deep frying

Parmigiano Reggiano (Parmesan Cheese)

Chili Flakes

Fresh Parsley

Salt & White Pepper

Directions

Scrub and peel the potatoes. Reserve them in a large bowl full of cold water.

Slice the peeled potatoes into french fries and then put them back into the cold water.

Drain the potato fries and dry them well on a paper towel.

Heat the oil in a deep fryer to 320F and deep fry the fries until they are half done. They should be cooked through but pale and soggy looking. Remove from oil, drain and let cool for 20 minutes.

While the fries are cooling dice the parsley, grate about 2 tablespoons of the Parmigiano Reggiano, and mix all together with 1 tablespoon of chili flakes.

Now reheat the oil to 375F and add the fries back in until they are brown and crisp.

Drain again and toss with salt & pepper and the Parmesan, chili, and parsley mix. Careful not to add to much salt…the cheese is already a bit salty.

This is one great tasting Creamy Potato Soup Recipe. It is pure culinary genius to add bacon and cheese to the potato soup. It tastes so good that it will make you tingle all over. I promise…It’s true!!!

On a cool autumn afternoon or during a Sunday family dinner there is nothing, and I do mean nothing, that will bring peace and harmony to the table like the flavors that are captured when you have a Cheese Potato Soup Recipe that has the added benefit of being creamy with the taste of bacon in the background.

How To Make Creamy Potato Soup

Ingredients

3 cups milk

1 can (10.75 oz) condensed cream of potato soup

2 cups frozen Southern-Style hash browns (or substitute)

1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

4 slices of bacon, cooked, drained, and crumbled

1/4 cup green onions, thinly sliced

Directions

Mix milk and soup in large saucepan.

Stir in hash browns. Bring to a boil on high heat, stirring occasionally.

Reduce heat to medium-low, simmer 10 minutes, stirring frequently.

Ladle into soup bowls

Top evenly with cheese bacon and onions

This potato soup receipe has the added benefit of being very easy to make. Unlike most potato soup recipies, this one does use some pre-made ingredients: hash browns and one can of cream of potato soup.
